Every year, our grade 5 students embark on a learning journey called the exhibition. During this unit, students collaborate with their teachers and one another to design and inquire about topics of their interest. The exhibition is the watershed moment for our students who have been in the PYP for all six years of the IB program—it is where they showcase all that they’ve learned over the years!
Students are encouraged to demonstrate what they understand about a globally minded issue that resonates with them. They work together in teams of 2-5, using their Approaches to Learning Skills (Thinking, Social, Self-Management, Research, and Communication) to inquire about an issue of their choice that motivates them to take action in their local environment.
While all units in the PYP are based on inquiry and the inquiry cycle, in the exhibition, students are expected to explicitly talk about their journey through each of the steps and reflect on what they are learning and doing along the way. On this page, we aim to give a glimpse of what the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition looks like at ISM through all the component parts of the inquiry cycle.
The first step of the Exhibition is for students to tune into what they want to inquire about for the project. Students spend the first week of the project reflecting on what they have learned in the past or what topics they are interested in that they have yet to learn. From there, students learn the difference between a topic and an issue. This distinction helps students to think globally and connect their inquiry to action. At the end of the Tuning In phase, students identified the top three issues they wanted to inquire about before being placed into their Exhibition group.
