Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Supporting the Whole Child: Our SEL Philosophy

At ISM, we believe that educating the whole child means nurturing not just academic growth, but also the social, emotional, and mental well-being of every student. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is woven into the fabric of our school culture—from Kindergarten through Grade 8.

In our Primary Years Programme (PYP), each day begins with Morning Meeting, a time for students to build community, practice empathy, and develop emotional awareness in a safe, welcoming space. Our elementary team implements Responsive Classroom strategies that help students build strong relationships, self-regulation skills, and a sense of belonging.

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), our focus on SEL continues through the use of restorative practices and a vibrant House System that fosters peer connection, leadership, and inclusion across grade levels. These structures help students navigate challenges, build identity, and contribute positively to the school community.

Our dedicated SEL and mental health team includes:

  • Heather Murphy, School Counselor (Tier 1 & 2 support)

  • Jasmine Contapay, Tier 3 Mental Health Therapist

Together, they work to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered.
